Car insurance: Motorists 'still using mobiles at the wheel'
01 Dec 2008
Car insurance holders could be interested to learn new figures show lives are still being lost because of people using their mobile phones at the wheel, it has been claimed.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is urging motorists to adhere to the law passed on December 1st 2003 as people are still being "needlessly" killed and injured.
A RoSPA statement noted there were 25 fatal, 64 serious and 256 slight accidents caused last year in which a driver using a mobile phone was the contributory factor.
Kevin Clinton, RoSPA head of road safety, said: "RoSPA led the campaign to ban the use of mobile phones by drivers and as we reach the laws fifth anniversary, it is important that people do not forget the clear road safety reasons behind it."
He added that when gathering evidence police have the ability to check mobile phone records to see if a car insurance holder has using a phone at the wheel in careless and dangerous driving cases.
TyreSafe claimed last week that the motor tyre industry is calling on motorists to consider cold weather tyres this winter to stay safe on the road.
